Dynamo clinches playoff berth with win over Cary

APEX – The Carolina Dynamo got another shutout from goalie Brock Duckworth and clinched a spot in the PDL playoffs with a 1-0 victory over the Cary Clarets at Middle Creek Park.

Zach Loyd scored the game’s only goal in the 41th minute. Sheanon Williams was credited with the assist. Duckworth had five saves and the shutout was his second in three games against Cary.

The Dynamo (9-4-2) has won six of its last seven and is assured of one of the three playoffs spots from the Mid Atlantic Division. Cary fell to 9-4-3.

Carolina ends its regular season at home Friday against the Fredricksburg (Va.) Gunners. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Macpherson Stadium.

“We’re on a roll,” Dynamo general manager Scott Zapko said. “We’re getting hot at the right time. Cary is one of the better teams in the league and we finished 2-1 against them. We’re coming together and getting hot at the right time.”

The match was marred by three ejections. A Cary player was ejected in the 62nd minute. The Clarets lost another player to an ejection in the 73rd minute. The Dynamo’s E.J. O’Keeffe picked up his second yellow card of the match and was ejected in stoppage time.

Dynamo’s unbeaten streak ends at five

By BRIAN JOURA

Special to the News & Record

GREENSBORO – The Carolina Dynamo entered Saturday with a five-game unbeaten streak, including a 1-0 road win over Cary on July 1st.

But Saturday night at Macpherson Stadium, the Clarets turned the tables with a 1-0 win of their own and, in the process, firmed up their hold on second place in the Mid Atlantic Division, extending their lead to four points over the Dynamo.

The only goal of the game came at the 22-minute mark when Cary’s Ronnie Bouemboue got a goal past Brock Duckworth.

“The mistake that we made,” Dynamo coach Joe Brown said, “we already made the save, we stopped playing because we thought the ball was going out of bounds. The defender let the guy get in and they scored the goal. We didn’t listen for a whistle from the referee and we should know better. That’s fundamentals. We left the back door open and they took advantage of it.”

The Dynamo normally is very aggressive at home, which results in numerous scoring opportunities.

But Cary controlled the action Saturday and Carolina had few scoring chances throughout the game.

“The first 20 minutes I was happy with our play, but after they scored their goal, I think we kind of fell off a little bit,” Brown said. “They were opportunistic. We just did not finish our chances. I don’t think we had the urgency we had for the last month.”

Only a strong game from Duckworth kept the game close in the first half.

The Dynamo played a stronger game in the second half, but no team really dominated play the way Cary did in the final 25 minutes of Saturday’s game.

With the game winding down, the Dynamo forced the attack, trying to net the tying goal.

After the clock hit 90 minutes, Carolina had its best shot of the evening.

But a header by Sheanon Williams off a ball initially struck by Arie Muniz went just over the net and Cary escaped with three points while Carolina suffered its first shutout of the season.

“They had an answer back for us for beating them last week,” Brown said. “These guys know each other and the team that makes mistakes loses. They made the mistake last week we made it tonight. We had just as many opportunities for us to get a chance on goal and we just didn’t finish it.”

CARY – In a match where the second spot in the Mid-Atlantic Division standings was on the line, the Carolina Dynamo defeated the Cary Clarets 1-0 on Wednesday.

The win is the Dynamo’s fifth consecutive and their sixth in their last seven.

The Dynamo was unable to convert early opportunities but pressed on and eventually broke through with the game-winner in the 75th minute.

ADVANCE – The Carolina Dynamo attack was threatening in the first half of Saturday evening’s game against the Virginia Legacy, but with only one goal, it certainly wasn’t lethal.

“The first half we didn’t really play our game,” forward Cody Arnoux said. “Kind of giving the ball away a lot, and not really making them chase and tiring them out.”

But that all changed after halftime, and Carolina’s offensive clinic led to a flood of goals that lifted the squad to a dominating 5-1 win at BB&T Park.

The win lifted the Dynamo to 7-3-2 and helped them keep pace with Cary in the PDL’s top-heavy Mid-Atlantic Division standings. Carolina and Cary are tied for second place with 23 points, three points behind division-leading Reading. Virginia dropped to 1-5-6.

The Dynamo played well in the first half thanks to lots of pressure in the midfield and a fluid attack up front that struck early.

A ball served into the box found the head of Garry Lewis on the right side of the area, and he nodded it across the goal mouth to the left. Arnoux took over from there, as he went airborne for a volley that rocketed into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.

“We knew (Virginia) played last night, a difficult match,” Carolina coach Joe Brown said. “We wanted to get on top of them early. No problem — we did what we had to do there.”

The rest of the half saw the Dynamo bend a little in the back with some surrendered free kicks in threatening areas, but the defensive line held strong.

“I thought our two center backs did well closing their front runners down,” Brown said. “And that’s really what started off everything, just making a statement they weren’t going to get into us.”

UNC’s Zach Loyd made his presence felt on both ends of the field all night long, but particularly along the right flank. He was able to control play from that position on numerous occasions and provide dangerous crosses into the box.

Carolina threatened several times, but few were closer than a through ball down the middle of the field that Arnoux hammered just wide right on a first-touch shot near the end of the half.

But missed opportunities weren’t a problem in the second half.

Arnoux pinpointed more ball control as a key to getting Virginia to come out of its “shell” and open up space.

The all-important second goal came in the 55th minute thanks to more work from Loyd. The busy midfielder gathered a long cross from Rojo outside the top right of the box, and he measured the situation before playing in a low ball that found the feet of forward Karo Okiomah for a tap-in goal.

Virginia rallied for a quick strike in the 58th minute, but the Carolina pressure continued to build as the half wore on.

“I think just us keeping the ball a lot more, making them chase a little bit opened up the flanks. And then we got a couple breakaways and stuff like that just because we were just spreading them out a little bit,” said Arnoux, who played a huge part in sealing the victory.

First the talented Wake Forest forward received a pass in the 69th minute around the top of the box and turned a funny bounce into an acrobatic high lob over the charging keeper that trickled slowly into the empty net for a 3-1 lead.

After that it was two assists to Arie Muniz and Lewis to put the game well out of reach and give the Dynamo a good vibe despite playing a busy schedule.

“Since last weekend, we’ve played four games in (eight) days,” said Brown, whose team has won four in a row. “And we finished with some energy, and we finished with some chances on goal. So I’m happy with that.”

Goals: Carolina — Cody Arnoux 2, Garry Lewis, Arie Muniz, Karo Okiomah; Virginia — Hunter Smith. Assists: Carolina — Arnoux 2, Scott Rojo 1, Zach Loyd 1, Lewis 1; Virginia — Justin Madrid. Shots: Carolina 15, Virginia 8. Saves: Carolina 6, Virginia 5. Corner kicks: Carolina 3, Virginia 1.

Arnoux’s 3 goals power hot Dynamo

Story thanks to the News & Record

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Cody Arnoux scored three goals and assisted on another to lift the Carolina Dynamo to a 5-1 win over the West Virginia Chaos in PDL men’s soccer Thursday night at Schoenbaum Stadium.

The Dynamo (6-3-2) moved into a virtual tie with Cary and Reading for first place in the Mid-Atlantic Division. West Virginia dropped to 2-6-3.

Arnoux, a rising senior at Wake Forest and a finalist for the Hermann Award last fall, accumulated a career-high seven points for the Dynamo.

“He just has a knack for the goal,” Dynamo general manager Scott Zapko said. “He always finds himself in the right spot at the right time.”

Arnoux and the Dynamo opened the scoring with a goal in the 10th minute. Caro Oklomah scored Carolina’s second goal in the 26th minute.

West Virginia cut the deficit to 2-1 a minute later on Adam Arthur’s goal.

The Dynamo scored three second-half goals to put the game out of reach. Arnoux scored in the 45th minute, then scored again in the 72nd minute. Teammate Chris Lebo closed out the scoring in the 81st minute.

“In the second half, we just turned it on,” Zapko said.

The Dynamo, winners of three straight, will host Virginia on Saturday at BB&T Park in Winston-Salem.

“We’re actually getting some cohesion in our lineup,” Zapko said. “Earlier, we were missing players to things like weddings and stuff like that. But we’re putting one of our better lineups together now.”

Goals: Carolina — Cody Arnoux (10th, 45th, 72nd), Caro Okiomah (26th), Chris Lebo (81st); West Virginia — Adam Arthur (27). Assists: Carolina — Okiomah 2, Arnoux, Garry Lewis. Shots: Carolina 10, West Virginia 8. Saves: Carolina (Brock Duckworth 4, Michael Chesler 1) 5; West Virginia (Adam Mitchell) 3. Corner kicks: Carolina 5, West Virginia 6.

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. – The Carolina Dynamo capped an impressive weekend with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Fredricksburg Gunners on Sunday in a PDL men’s soccer match at Fredericksburg Academy.

The win followed Saturday night’s 3-1 victory over Northern Virginia, helping the Dynamo stay within three points of second-place Cary in the Mid-Atlantic Division standings.

“We’re happy because we separated ourselves from some the teams that were making a playoff push up the standings,” Dynamo assistant coach Matt Brown said.

Trailing 1-0, Carolina (5-3-2) tied the game in the 67th minute on a goal by Gary Lewis. The Dynamo took the lead five minutes later on Scott Rojo’s goal off a pass from Sheanon Williams. Williams assisted on both goals.

Reserves power Dynamo past Northern Virginia (Thanks to the News & Record.)

Sunday, June 7, 2009

GREENSBORO — The Carolina Dynamo simply had too much depth for the Northern Viginia Royals.

Even without the contingent of players from UNC-Chapel Hill, who were just finishing up their trip to Costa Rica, the Dynamo never trailed and came away with a 3-1 win at Macpherson Stadium.

And on top of that it was the reserves for Carolina who did all of the scoring. Midfielder Erfan Imani came off the bench after an injury to Daniel Roberts and scored the only goal in the first half, giving the Dynamo the lead at the 33-minute mark.

“We wanted to try to get them all in in different spots,” Carolina coach Joe Brown said of his substitution plan. “For Erfan’s situation I wanted to see him behind the forwards sooner or later. Obviously the situation called for that and I thought he did a good job.”

While it was the only goal of the half, the Dynamo had several opportunities and generally forced all of the action in the opening 45 minutes. And when Carolina did not press the attack, Brown was up pacing the sidelines, urging his team to stay on the offensive.

“It’s such a new group,” Brown said. “We still have a lot of talent. We are not playing with the intensity that we need to, certainly when we play at home. Sometime you just have to motivate them.”

Carolina finally cashed in on some chances in the second half. Defenseman Chris Estridge came up with the ball at midfield and the Royals kept expecting him to pass the ball. Instead, Estridge took it deep into Northern Virginia territory, before hammering home a goal at the 73-minute mark.

“Chris did a very good job for us coming out of the back,” Brown said. “He just realized the opening was coming and he didn’t have to pass it.”

Minutes later, Imani booted his second goal of the night, off a feed from Cody Arnoux.

“The energy of the subs made a difference for us tonight,” Brown said. “We should be wearing teams down and our subs should be a game-changer for us.”

The Royals scored a goal late to ruin the shutout. Brown was upset with the defensive lapse and blamed the team rather than keeper Brock Duckworth.

Goals: Carolina, Erfan Imeni 2, Chris Estridge. Northern Virginia: Yu Hoshide. Assists: Carolina, Thomas Campbell, Cody Arnoux. Northern Virginia, Phil Gordon. Shots: Carolina 16, Northern Virginia 5. Saves: Carolina (Brock Duckworth) 2, Northern Virginia (Joel Helmic) 4. Corner Kicks: Carolina 5, Northern Virginia 5.

Records: Northern Virginia 0-5-3; Carolina 3-2-2
