About the PDL

The Premier Development League www.uslsoccer.com (PDL) is the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid that begins with Major League Soccer, and incorporates the USL-1 and USL-2 divisions.  The league is designed to develop top young talent, giving young aspiring professionals and elite collegiate players the opportunity to play in an organized league with veterans to learn from.  Eight of the 26 player’s on each professional team roster are permitted to be over the age of 23.  For this reason the league contains a large number of elite college talent, and a sprinkling of professional experience.  USA National team stars such as Brian Ching, Jay DeMerit, and Sacha Kljestan, and seasoned World class professionals such as Jurgen Klinsmann have also played in the league.

The PDL is often used as a ‘shop window’ by top level professional teams who look to watch players ahead of the MLS Superdraft, this gives you the chance to see developing stars in live action at PDL games year in and year out.

Dynamo Coach/Executive Steps Down

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Greensboro, NC:  Today the Carolina Dynamo announced Dynamo Head Coach & Vice President, Joe Brown is leaving the club in order to pursue other opportunities.  Brown is the CEO/President of US Futbol Training located in Delaware.  In 2002, Coach Brown was inducted in the USL Hall of Fame and named USL D-3 Pro League executive of the year.  Brown coached the Dynamo for 11 years and leaves the club as the leader in all time wins, compiling a record of 116-61-14.  Brown’s teams won two regular season National Championships (2003 & 2006), and countless divisional titles.  Prior to joining the Dynamo Brown owned and coached the Delaware Wizards compiling a record of 49-37-11.  Browns overall record in USL is 165-99-26.  “It is obviously bitter-sweet that I leave the Dynamo” says Brown.  “I’d like to thank all the local soccer clubs, corporate partners as well as Neil Macpherson (Dynamo founder) for their support over the years.  I’ve made many of life-long friends and relationships during my time in Greensboro and the Dynamo will always have a special place in my heart,” Brown goes onto add.   Dynamo GM Scott Zapko says, “We’ll miss Joe Brown on many levels as he is a top notch soccer coach and executive. He has done wonders to help promote soccer here in the Triad during his time with the Dynamo.   He will always be part of the Dynamo tradition of excellence. With that being said, it is business as usual for the Dynamo.  We continue to bring affordable family entertainment and a high level of soccer to the Piedmont.  As for a coach, we have several in mind but don’t plan on hiring one until after the Holidays,” Zapko continues.

Joe Brown Bio:

Coach Brown has over 25 years of coaching experience at most levels in the United States. Brown leaves the Dynamo having coached a total of 15 seasons in the USL, eleven with the Carolina Dynamo and four with the Delaware Wizards. During his stint with Delaware he lead the Wizards to three Northeast Divisional Finals and was selected Atlantic Division Coach of the year in 1993. In 1999, the Carolina Dynamo advanced further than any other D3 team in the Lamar Hunt US OPEN CUP before bowing out of the tournament to the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.

In 2000, Brown was appointed Head Coach of the Region 1 team that competed in The US Soccer Festival. In 2002, Coach Brown was inducted in the USL Hall Of Fame and named USL executive of the year. In 2003, the Carolina Dynamo won the USL Pro Select League Regular season championship and Brown was selected as Pro Select League Coach of the Year. He has been a staff coach for Delaware and Maryland’s Olympic

Development Programs. Prior to his years in the USL, Brown coached at the Junior college level at Delaware Tech for two seasons. His Spirit teams where ranked in the NJCAA top 20 both seasons and in 1991 the team reached a high record ranking 10th in the Nation. Brown spent ten years coaching in the high school level at A.I. DuPont High School in Greenville, Delaware, winning four Blue Hen conference titles and competing in the state playoffs for eight seasons, including four state semi-final appearances. Brown holds an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation. In June of 2005, with a 6-2 victory over Raleigh CASL Elite, Brown broke the record for the most wins in the Club’s history.

In 2006, Brown led the Carolina Dynamo to an undefeated PDL regular season national championship, only the seventh team to accomplish this in the 21-year history of United Soccer Leagues. The 2006 the Dynamo advanced further than any PDL team in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with the victories over Cape Cod, Richmond Kickers (USL-2), Seattle Sounders (USL-1), before losing to the Houston Dynamo of MLS. Brown was selected PDL Coach of the Year in 2006.

In 2006 and 2007 the Dynamo won back to back South Atlantic division titles and in 2007 the Dynamo reached the National quarterfinals in the Southern Conference Championship game. Carolina Dynamo record 116-61-14…Delaware Wizards record 49-37-11… USL Totals 165-99-26

Linnville a Sophomore Stalwart

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Link to Full Story from USL: http://pdl.uslsoccer.com/home/475630.html

By Andrew Sartorius, The Daily Princetonian

At first, sophomore Mark Linnville never considered Princeton — or any Ivy League school for that matter — as a possible destination when he was being recruited two years ago for the men’s soccer team. Linnville, a standout high school player from Hendersonville, N.C., was focusing on a number of large Division I programs when Princeton came knocking late in the recruitment process.

“Going to a school in the Ivy League never really crossed my mind,” he said matter-of-factly. “I was initially looking at big schools like UNC and Notre Dame, and Princeton came in only later. But it was a brilliant opportunity and I couldn’t pass it up.”

Indeed, Linnville became enamored with the Tiger program so quickly that he committed to attend during his official visit.

“For me, the stars aligned,” he explained. “You can’t really say no to playing for a school like Princeton.”

Anibaba Having Immediate Impact
After Transfer, UNC Defender is Fitting Right In

USL Feature http://pdl.uslsoccer.com/home/469520.html

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

By NICHOLAS MURRAY

Transferring to a different college can be challenging for any college soccer player, but when you transfer to a school with the tradition of the University of North Carolina it raises the stakes to a completely different level.

For defender Jalil Anibaba, though, the transition couldn’t have gone much better.

“It’s an honor, and it’s a lot of fun,” Anibaba said of playing for the Tar Heels. “We have high expectations on us, but as far as the team goes everything is very relaxed and we really like to have fun.”

Anibaba transferred from the University of Santa Clara, where he won the Freshman of the Year in the West Coast Conference in 2007. Now a senior, he is making a strong impact on UNC’s good start to the season, including being named ACC Player of the Week for his strong performance in a 1-0 victory on the road against rival Duke. Anibaba credits the way he has integrated himself into the team to the spring season he spent with the Tar Heels.

“The spring season was very crucial for the learning process for me,” Anibaba said. “I think if I hadn’t come here for the spring it would have made it much more difficult and would have had much less time to adapt. Me and Coach Elmar (Bolowich), we knew the spring was what really helped me adapt into the team because I was able to play spring games and make mistakes.”

Something else that helped was the time Anibaba spent with the Carolina Dynamo of the USL Premier Development League. Anibaba had played in the league before, suiting up for the PSA Storm in California in 2009, but this summer he was able to also get to know four of his new Tar Heels teammates – Cameron Brown, Stephen McCarthy, Josh Rice and Dustin McCarty – as they played alongside each other for the Dynamo.

“It definitely helped me in terms of first and foremost staying sharp but two, getting to know the guys that are here at Chapel Hill both on and off the field,” Anibaba said.

Now ranked No.2 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the Tar Heels are a clear contender to be at the NCAA Final Four in Santa Barbara, Calif. in December. But Anibaba knows that with the bulk of the team’s ACC schedule still before it, and an arduous path to the Final Four assured, the Tar Heels can’t take anything for granted at this stage.

“The biggest key for us is not to become complacent,” Anibaba said. “If we don’t get complacent and keep working hard and maintain our humble attitude, we’ll do well.”
